Some Basic SEO Best Practices

SEO is one of the most fundamental elements that should be worked into your website strategy.  It is an ongoing process, but there are initial things you can do to at least make sure you are “optimizing” your exposure.  If you are not doing a full fledged SEO strategy, the least you could do would be to make sure that you have covered the following:

Title Tag – SEO and Web Usability Considerations

The title of each web page (inserted into the header), identifies the content of the page – need content rich titles – this is the most prominent piece of information available to searchers (page topic) and rank.

1.    Should be in the title case (proper case)
2.    Most significant words first (Don’t’ repeat)
3.    Every page should have its own unique title
4.    Title pages become bookmarks—make them easy for end users to bookmark your pages
5.    Homepage pages should always have the name of your organization within their titles
6.    For Google, the title tag limit is 66 Characters

Becoming an active member in the community (online or physical) is one of the most important things you can do for your business. Your goal in utilizing a social network should be to reach out to your customers, NOT solicit them for business. Social networks are becoming more and more popular environments for people of any age, and any psycho-graphic, so your ability to connect to a very narrow target is becoming more accessible by the minute.

In order to use social networks to build your brand, you have to be transparent, and genuine.  Imagine that you have a small business (a market maybe, or specialty store), but the concept of marketing or advertising has not been invented yet (by “marketing” I mean, what we know today as “traditional advertising tactics”).  Your shop’s success is measured and made possible, only through the personal service and experience you provide your customers on a daily basis; how you interact with them, and what you say.  Do you ask questions?  Do you listen?  Do you show a genuine interest in their well-being, and understanding their needs?
